Frequently Asked Questions

To be eligible for participation the KU PREP program, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident,
  • Have received a bachelor's degree within the last three years, and
  • Intend to attend graduate school in a science-related field.
  • Be a member of a group that is underrepresented in the biomedical sciences

The goal of PREP is to support educational activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical research workforce. Underrepresented populations include individuals with disabilities, individuals from specific racial and ethnic groups as identified by the National Science Foundation, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Full eligibility information is available in the Notice of NIH's Interest in Diversity.

In addition to providing students with a mentored research experience and supplemental coursework, PREP also provided personalized academic counseling, assistance selecting and applying to graduate programs, local presentation opportunities, travel support to attend national meetings, and other opportunities to enhance research and academic skills.

A mentor is a KU or KU affiliated faculty member who can provide a research lab for a PREP student. Because your mentor shapes your research experience, the program coordinator is available to help you identify potential faculty mentors that fit your research interests and career goals.  To begin your mentor search, see Find a Mentor for a list of departments that participate in PREP.

If you are a faculty member that is interested in hosting a postbaccalaureate student in your laboratory, please contact the PREP Program Coordinator.
